Have you use BADLs? (Bristol Activities of Daily Living Scale) could be a god outcome measure, looks at how independent someone is in ADLs

Hello,

I work at an inpatient mental health hospital, the OT's I work with use the Kohlberg Evaluation of Living Skills in combination with a small cooking task, or try to screen the person when they wake up to see how they perform. The KELS asks the client to report on how often they perform ADL's, and provides information on their safety knowledge, and what they do with their leisure time. It only takes 30 minutes or so. Screening the person cooking at times helps to as there are many performance skills that can be assessed while cooking.Thank you for this post, I'm interested to hear more about what other OT's use. How big is your OT department? At the facility I work at we are currently making more people aware of what we do, but we only have 3 OT's inpatient and 1 COTA who provides outpatient services. If you have a larger department, can you share what you do? Are you a part of the treatment team? Do you provide screenings to all new admissions? Do you provide groups only or individual settings? I hope to learn more about how other mental health facilities work with occupational therapy.

Thank you,

Kate

Vicky,
Finding proper assessments with good reliability and predictability can be difficult. The recent research suggests that the KELS assessment is an excellent redicter of independent living skills.
Has assessemnts have you attempted?
What assessments do you have availible?
"KELS reliability have ranges from r = .74 to r = .94, significant at p <.001 (Bruce & Borg, 1993). Both concurrent and predictive validity have been established for the KELS. Research studies have established the concurrent validity of the KELS with correlation coefficients ranging from r = .78 to r = .89, significant at p <.001 (Thompson, 1992). Predictive validity for the KELS has been established with correlation coefficients ranging from r = .72 to r = 1.00, significant at p <.001" (Thompson, 1992).

Please let me know if you are familiar with the KELS as I would be happy to assist you with the process.
